Geothermal heat pumps use earth loops to absorb heat in the summer and cold in the winter using a closed-loop piping system. According to the EPA, geothermal systems are “the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean and cost-effective space conditioning systems available today.”
Compared to traditional methods, geothermal systems have been shown to cut the cost of heating and cooling by as much as 80%. The three largest energy costs in a typical home are heating, cooling, and making hot water. A geothermal system can address all of these components and may be one of the smartest home investments you may ever make.
These systems are most commonly installed on new construction projects, however, there are many applications where geothermal heating and cooling can be retrofitted to an existing home, utilizing much of the existing components.
